SmarterTools, the developer of SmarterMail, has notified us that the upcoming SmarterMail update will include fixes for reported security vulnerabilities (CVEs). As part of these security improvements, SmarterMail is changing the way App Passwords are generated and handled.
Who is affected?
Customers whose email accounts have Two-Factor Authentication (2FA) enabled will be affected.
As part of the upgrade, SmarterMail will regenerate the App Passwords for these accounts. App Passwords are used by email clients and applications such as Outlook, Apple Mail, mobile mail apps, and other services that connect to the mailbox when 2FA is enabled.
Customers whose email accounts do not have 2FA enabled will not be affected and should continue using their existing email passwords as normal.
What affected customers need to do
After the update, affected customers will need to:
- Log in to webmail using their normal email account password.
- A notification/pop-up will display the newly generated App Passwords.
- Replace the existing App Password in any email clients or applications that use the account.
- Continue using the new App Password for those applications going forward.
The normal mailbox password itself is not being changed. The change applies specifically to the App Passwords used by accounts with 2FA enabled.
Scheduled Update
The SmarterMail security update is currently scheduled for:
Sunday, August 30, 2026 at 5:00 AM UTC
Customers using 2FA should be prepared to update their App Passwords in their email clients after the upgrade.
